Twilight Skype Session Wednesday 16th October 2019...
Some schools believe that everyone has their own ethics, and that what is right or wrong depends on the time, place, and even the preferences or every day life of a person or family.
We all have our cultural and individual differences, but should this affect the way we teach individuals?
Personally, I feel teaching in a school based in a deprived area with so many disadvantaged kids would automatically change the approach I have to how I deliver my lessons. However there are students and families that may be disadvantaged but it has not affected they way they are or the way they learn so I feel should be treated with the same speed of learning and the same boundaries and discipline as any one else from any area.
Whilst this is true in some cases, it is not in others and kids at school have really grown up with rough backgrounds and have parents with no morals and this affects they're behaviour or they're attention span in class. This is when I feel individual culture could affect my ethics and I have to be tactful and patient with these kids. They still should have boundaries and consistency but I have to stay calm and positive to really keep them on side. This would obviously be different to how I would conduct myself with other students in my class.
Once you start seeing small positive changes in participation and learning with these students it is one of the most rewarding things in the world.
Another thing that came up was actually how you communicate with the students and parents, someone mentioned that teaching in a private school they expect you to conduct yourself to students and parents in a certain way whereas I find being down earth and speaking to these kids by just being myself works well.
I would really like to look further into this and learn a lot more as I had never thought about If I did have to teach in a private school for example how I would in fact change how I conduct myself and change the language I use and maybe even change my expectations. I would not know this until I had actually experienced it I think but it is something to think about.
For my learning I am going to be really conscious in how I set my expectations and see if setting them higher for certain lessons changes the results I get.
Thankyou for the skype I got a lot of thinking from this...
